Other bodies offer mechanisms for protecting the public who purchase financial products and services. We encourage you to review the mechanisms in order to help you take the appropriate steps.

AMF mediation services

The AMF may provide mediation between a dissatisfied consumer and a firm that is registered with the AMF. However, a consumer who feels he or she has been wronged must first file a complaint with the firm involved, which must have a mechanism for handling complaints and settling disputes. If the consumer is not satisfied with the proposed solution, he or she can approach the AMF to request mediation services.

AMF review committee

Consumer who have filed an investigation request with the Chambre de la sécurité financière and were dissatisfied with the syndic’s decision not to put the matter before the disciplinary committee may either file a private complaint or address the AMF’s review committee.

Laying a private complaint

When the syndic makes the decision not to file a complaint, the person who asked for the inquiry is allowed to lay a disciplinary complaint. This is known as a private complaint. Click here for further information about laying a private complaint.

Office de la protection du consommateur

The Office de la protection du consommateur (consumer protection office) informs citizens about their rights, responsibilities and remedies, so that consumers are more independent regarding the decisions they must make and settling disputes they may have with firms. The Office represents consumers and promotes their interests with other public authorities. It also monitors the implementation of the legislation it is responsible for.

Compensation fund

The AMF pays indemnities to victims of fraud, fraudulent tactics or embezzlement for which individuals or firms authorized to practice. It also rules on the eligibility of claims and sets the amount of the indemnities to be paid to victims. This fund is made up of by mandatory annual dues paid by the representatives and firms registered with the AMF. To learn more about the compensation fund, click here.

Note that the recourses who have been described and the requests for investigation filed with the Chambre are all independent mechanisms. In the event of divergent decisions or rulings by these bodies, they cannot be contested before the Chambre.
