What is a professional development unit (PDU) ?

A professional development unit or “PDU” is the quantitative value attributed to a training activity recognized by the Chamber. One (1) PDU represents one (1) hour of training.

How do I register for distance training ?
There are a few ways of registering for our distance training :
How do I know whether a training activity is recognized by the Chamber ?

Before registering, the representative must make sure that the training activity is recognized by the Chamber. The provider (person, organization or educational institution dispensing the training activity) is obliged to tell you this. The Chamber will have assigned a recognition number to this activity.

Is a training activity recognized by the Chamber and taken before the certificate is obtained recognized ?

Under the Regulation governing Compulsory Professional Development, only training taken after the certificate is obtained is valid. Courses taken to earn the certificate do not qualify.

What are the compulsory professional development periods covered ?

Compulsory professional development is established on the basis of cycles lasting two years. The new cycle end date is now November 30. It is the same for all representatives, regardless of the date the certificates are issued.

Can PDUs be carried forward to the next cycle ?

No. A representative who has accumulated more than the requisite number of PDUs cannot carry them over to a subsequent period.

How do I obtain proof of attendance ?

The training provider must give you an attendance certificate that clearly specifies your name, your certificate number, the Chamber’s recognition number as well as the number of PDUs attributed to this activity.

How do I prove that I attended training activities?

Since mid-January 2007, representatives can enter their own proof of attendance at training activities on the Chamber’s site, through secure access via the “PDU Record” tab.

If you enter your own proof of attendance on the site, you must keep the proof of attendance as the Chamber may verify it. At the Chamber’s request, representatives must send in proof of attendance at training activities within 30 days. It is representatives’ responsibility to keep attestations of attendance at training activities.

If you do not enter your proof of attendance on the Chamber website, you must send it in so that we can input it for you. You can send it by mail (300, Léo-Pariseau Street, 26th floor, Montreal (Quebec) H2X 4B8) or fax (514 282-2225).

What happens if a representative is unable to accumulate the requisite number of PDUs ?

The Chamber may temporarily exempt a representative from the obligation to accumulate the requisite number of PDUs if, because of illness or injury or for family or parental reasons, he was unable to comply.

The representative sends a written request to the Chamber asking for the exemption and provides supporting documents or a medical certificate to justify this request. Regarding the Insurance of persons and Group Insurance of persons sectors, the exemption request must specify the representative’s name, certificate number and the exemption period requested. Regarding the representative of a mutual fund dealer and the representative of a scholarship plan dealer registration categories, the exemption request must specify the representative’s name, his/her access code and the exemption period requested. The Chamber will inform the representative of its decision.

What happens if a representative does not complete his professional development ?

The representative must comply with the requirements of professional development by November 30 of the year ending the cycle at the latest. If he does not meet the requirements, the AMF will not renew his certificate or his registration, and thus he will not be authorized to conduct business in each sector or registration category for wich he did not comply with the requirements of professional development.
